On Saturday May 6, 2023, Single Moms Planet and Boss Talks held their “Mother’s Day Celebration” event at the Culver Hotel in Los Angeles.
The event was an early celebration of Mother’s Day and brought together women from around the city. It kicked off with speeches by Single Moms Planet Co-founders Neferteri Plessy and Cole Patterson, who spoke about the organization’s mission to uplift under-resourced single mom business owners and working mothers through comprehensive programs of financial literacy, business development, mentorship, and entrepreneurial training.
Boss Talks co-founders Hillary Gadsby and Wendi Boyden then spoke about the current gaps in mentorship and their mission to create a network of entrepreneurs and female CEOs who can share first hand experiences and uplift each other in their career journeys. “Boss talks is a global mentorship platform for entrepreneurial women. The reason we decided to partner with Single Moms Planet is truly our relationship with Neferteri. She and the organization have been in our sphere for at least ten years and everything SMP does is for women, and anything boss talks does is for women, so it aligns so well,” said Gadsby. “I personally grew up with a single mom and she did everything for us, so I have such an appreciation for this organization and how they honor that woman who brings up kids and is an example,” added Boyden.
The event honored two women from the SMP community: Tiffney Camrbidge, author & educator and Blush, Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter.
“There is a quote that says ‘No influence is so powerful as that of a mother.’ When I read it, it touched me because it’s so true. I think that having a daughter and being her first point of reference for life- the choices she makes, the way that I live my life, the example I set for her, is so important. You can say a lot of things but it’s what you do. It’s about setting an example because your kids are watching you. Being there for her, showing up, being a lady, having class and dignity, knowing how to deal with rejection and disappointment… it’s so important. I teach her how powerful women really are and to have confidence in herself. She looks to me for that. I have a son also, which is amazing, but there is something different about raising a daughter especially in the world that we live in today. Raising a daughter with grace and dignity is so important. SMP has been a part of my journey for about 5 years. It is a community of mothers working together to help and encourage each other, and show each other different avenues for business and how to create different streams of income which is so, so important to our success and ability to leave a legacy for our children,” said Camrbridge. Cambridge children’s book was on display and available for purchase at the event.
“I was elated when I found out I was being honored. I am so grateful to be a part of the SMP organization as a single mom myself. I think it’s so important to celebrate each other and have these moments together. Sometimes the job of being a single mother feels so overwhelming and lonely and isolating, so having a place like this that is an open door, open arms and open to celebrating the work that single moms contribute is so rewarding ,” said Blush. Currently, Blush has a release out with artist Doechii called “What It Is” and a release coming soon with Jason Derulo. She also plans to drop her debut EP coming this September.
The event featured a brunch with signature cocktails from event sponsor Tres Generaciones who was represented by their West Coast Director, La’Britney (Britney Franklin.) “I’m a mother, a single mother, so coming together with other women and having that unity and support is so important. We lean on each other because raising children has no instructions, no rules. I am so thankful to connect with other women in the journey of motherhood who can inspire me to become a better person, a better mother, a better entrepreneur. I met the founders of Single Moms Planet a few years ago and we have been wanting to do an event like this for a while. As a brand ambassador for Tres, I was so happy to be able to do this and bring this amazing brand to these women to enjoy some beautiful cocktails before Mother’s Day,” said Franklin.
After brunch, the event featured a vision board workshop led by special guest Jeanette Ceja- an international speaker, travel host and journalist. The vision board allowed all attendees to come together and celebrate their goals and dreams in a fun, creative and safe space! “Vision boarding goes with imagination, creation, and possibility and it’s important to remind single moms and female entrepreneurs what they are capable of. Vision boards take us back to this childlike state and are a reminder to dream and strive for what we can achieve. I love hearing the success stories later and I am one of them myself,” said Ceja.
In addition, the event kicked off Single Moms Planet’s SMP 100 Accelerator which is now open for applications and will begin on May 23rd. The Accelerator is a virtual program that will offer 100 single mother applicants a grant contribution valued at $7,500.
